Fall 2019

It has been a busy fall, and we would love to celebrate with you, the past year's significant advances and achievements in the lab, for the cancer research fund, and personally for Dr. Leonard.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Dr. Leonard recently received the Gold Headed Cane Award from the University of Minnesota Department of Pediatrics in recognition of his exceptional individual contributions to pediatric care and education in Minnesota to ease the burden of suffering for others. It was an awesome day. Click HERE  for the news article about it from the University of Minnesota.

Saltzman / Leonard Cancer Research Lab Update: The main goal of the lab’s work this past year has been to engineer bacteria that colonize tumors consistently, comprehensively and without toxicity. These bacteria have been modified to secrete molecules into the tumor that stimulate the immune system to destroy the cancer and guard against its return. Once we find the optimal dosage of immuno-therapeutic genes, we will be prepared to translate our system into clinical therapy. It is extremely important to find the optimal combination of these strains for human clinical application, even though it is time consuming.

Dr. Leonard’s message to you: “We are confident that we can improve anti-tumor therapy. This is our specific aim, and my personal goal. We are grateful for your support and excited about the anticancer immune therapy being developed with that support.

Lab Tour: Please let us know if you are interested in learning more about the cancer research first-hand from the Doctors and Scientists while touring the lab on Wednesday, December 4th at 10:30.am Space is limited so please call Bonnie at 612-280-6244 to reserve your spot.

Phi Kappa Psi: We want to send a big shout out to the gentlemen of Phi Kappa Psi at the University of Minnesota, for hosting their annual Pumpkin Carve Fundraiser benefitting Dr. Leonard’s Cancer Research Fund. We are so impressed with these young men and their hard work to raise funds for local cancer research. The event gets better each year and it looks like this year they may exceed $10,000 in proceeds for the cancer research lab. How great is that?!

Save the Date: Thursday April 23rd, 2020 Doc's Cancer Shootout

More info will be available in January, please watch your mail and check out updates on our event page.

Year End Fundraising: Dr. Leonard and I have been humbled by the continuous outpouring of support from both individuals and groups who are contributing to the cancer fund or holding fundraisers to spread awareness and raise funds for the cancer research lab. THANK YOU! We depend on you and appreciate you, so very much.

We wish all the best to you and yours, for a wonderful holiday season, and are signing off with this photo of Doc in his beloved Dahlia garden from this past summer. He’s still got the magic touch in the garden!

Take care and call if you ever need anything!
